Gamma-Glutamyl transferase (GGT) Test

The gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) test measures the level of GGT enzyme in a blood sample taken from a vein to assess liver function. It is used to help detect liver disease or bile duct problems and to investigate causes of abnormal liver test results, including alcohol-related liver damage.

Why get tested?

To screen for liver disease and to help your doctor tell whether a raised concentration of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the bloodstream is due to liver or bone disease.

When to get tested?

If your doctor thinks that you have symptoms of a liver disorder/​disease.

Sample required?

A blood sample taken from a vein in your arm.

Test preparation needed?

No test preparation is needed.
