An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a blood sample taken from a vein, providing an indirect measure of inflammation in the body. It is used to detect and monitor inflammatory conditions, such as infections, autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and other disorders associated with inflammation.

Why get tested?

To detect and monitor the activity of inflammation as an aid in the diagnosis of the underlying cause.

When to get tested?

When your doctor thinks that you might have a condition that causes inflammation and to help diagnose and follow the course of this, especially temporal arteritis or polymyalgia rheumatica.

Sample required?

A blood sample taken from a vein in the arm.
